Copper 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, also known as Cupric 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, is a coordination compound formed by the reaction of copper ions with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT). It is known for its role as a corrosion inhibitor, particularly for copper and its alloys. MBT itself is a versatile compound used in various applications, including rubber vulcanization, as a fungicide, and as a corrosion inhibitor. Key aspects of Copper 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole:
  • Corrosion Inhibition:MBT is an effective corrosion inhibitor for copper and its alloys. The copper salt of MBT, formed through the interaction of copper ions with MBT, creates a protective layer on the metal surface, hindering corrosive processes.
  • Adsorption Mechanism:The mechanism of corrosion inhibition involves the adsorption of MBT molecules onto the copper surface, forming a protective film. This adsorption can occur through various binding modes, with both the thiol and thione tautomers of MBT potentially interacting with copper atoms.
  • Applications:Beyond its use in corrosion inhibition, copper 2-mercaptobenzothiazole can be found in various industrial applications where copper or copper alloys are used, and the corrosion protection provided by MBT is beneficial.
